You build a module for the layout. Well, not really a module. Just a part of the layout that would be easier to reach at the bench... See links below for pics.
Picture 1 This is the right end of this particular part. The DPM mockup you see will be a large factory serviced by the spur facing it. The building itself will be a wedge shaped building to fit up against the wall. The tanks are part of an the oil refinery that will be either relocated or sold. You can also see in this pic, the basswood roadbed I use. It can't be bought in any store, it is milled in the shops at woodcraft video.
Picture 2 shows the left end of the same section. 5 turnouts and 1 crossing. The roadbed is now ready for ties.
Picture 3 puts pics 1 and 2 together.
Picture 4 The ties are now down and I'm just showing off the progress on some of my handy work.
Picture 5 shows the crossing just before it is cleaned up. All the guard rails are in and all that is left is to clean the solder from the flangways. An 18 tpi RIGID hacksaw blade is used for this process. It is the ONLY one I've found that will work.
Picture 6 is the finished product. All the flangways have been cleaned and it is ready for the electrical shop. The 2 tracks on the front edge are the mainline tracks.
All needed gaps are cut, Tortise switch machines are installed and completely wired. Installing it on the layout was a trick in itself because of the location. It took 2 people to carry it out from the shop and wiggle it into place while a third person pulled all of the wires back.
